Clayton "Moe" Monroe Brunt

June 10, 1925 — February 13, 2011

Clayton Monroe “Moe” Brunt, 85, of Lewellen, died Sunday, February 13, 2011, from injuries received in a train-pickup accident west of Lewellen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 17, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Lewellen with Pastor Ray Weinerman officiating. Interment will be in the Ash Hollow Cemetery near Lewellen with military honors by the United States Navy Honor Guard.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh.

Memorials may be made to the Lewellen United Methodist Church or to the Riverview Assisted Living.

Clayton Monroe was born on June 10, 1925, in Lewellen to Clayton Ware and Lucy Iva (Miles) Brunt. He grew up and received his education in Lewellen, graduating from Lewellen Rural High School in 1943. Monroe then attended college at Nebraska Wesleyan College before entering the United States Navy after the Pearl Harbor attack. He served during WWII and was honorably discharge on February 12, 1946. After the service, he returned to Nebraska and attended Chadron State College.

He was united in marriage to Joan Delatour on December 24, 1946 at Lewellen. They made their home at the Chadron State Park while Monroe attended college. They returned to Lewellen where they ran the drug store for a few years. Monroe went into business for himself selling commercial custodial supplies to various businesses. He retired in the late 1980’s.

Monroe was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching them on T.V. He also enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and the companionship of a good hunting dog.

He was a member of the Elk’s Lodge in Ogallala, past fire chief for Blue Creek Fire Department; and a life-long member of the United Methodist Church in Lewellen.

Monroe is survived by his wife, Joan Brunt of Lewellen; three children, Cindy and husband Chris Hurlbutt of Oshkosh, Clayton and wife Kathy Brunt of Schuyler, NE, Cathy and husband Darrell Armbruster of Beaver Dam, WI; seven grandchildren, Mandy (Scott) Plog of Alliance, Ryan (Kassidy) Hurlbutt of Kearney, Abby (Ross) Jones of Glen Rock, WY, Allan Brunt of Kansas City, MO, Anna Brunt serving in the Peace Corps in El Salvador, Eryn (Chris) Banke of Johnson Creek, WI, Amber Armbruster of St. Paul, MN; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
