Arlene Thelander, 86, of Chappell, died early Wednesday morning, February 16, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Village in Alliance.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 19, 2011, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oshkosh with Pastor Sarah Cordray officiating. Interment will follow in Ash Hollow Cemetery near Lewellen.
Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service on Saturday.
Memorials may be made in Arlene’s name.

Helen Arlene was born on October 20, 1924, in Lincoln, Nebraska to Oscar P. and Helen Ida (Beam) Rentzsch. She spent her childhood on the ranch on Blue Creek and attended rural school at District 67. After her mother’s death in 1936, she resided in Lincoln with her aunt where she attended Lincoln High School for three years. In 1940, Arlene returned to Oshkosh to make her home and graduated from Garden County High School in 1941.
Arlene worked for J.O. Ross at the National Farm Loan office in Oshkosh for five years. She was united in marriage to LeRoy Thelander on February 20, 1947 at St. Francis, Kansas. They made their home on the ranch and to this union, one son, Patrick, was born.
Arlene was very active in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and was a member of the Cow Bells for several years.
She enjoyed her ceramics, sewing, and her greatest joy was working in the yard.
Arlene is survived by her husband, LeRoy Thelander of Chappell; son, Patrick and wife Diane Thelander of Oshkosh; three grandsons, Beau and wife Crystal Thelander of Oshkosh, Jessie Thelander and girlfriend Brianna Klein of Minatare, and Shane Thelander of Oshkosh; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Patricia Rankin.
