Clarence Dilley was born May 20, 1929 in Big Springs, Nebraska to Malachi (Kie) and Christina (Christensen) Dilley. Clarence went to grade school in the country and graduated from Garden County High School in 1946. He then went to work for various farmers and ranchers in Garden County. He also worked for Mumford’s Cream Station and Standlin Oil Company.
He hayed for and with Lee Mumford, Amos Rogers and Earl Christenson. In 1951 he married a Lisco schoolteacher, Norma L. Shaw in Oshkosh. To this union 4 children were born, Richard, Saralyn, Rocky, and Ryan.
Clarence and Norma worked for Vic Eldred. He hayed with horses and broke many to harness and ride. He was a real cowboy. The couple then moved to Snake Creek Ranch west of Alliance. During the years, he worked for Sutton Ranch, Willard Stoddard in Banner County. He drove bus and was part-time maintenance there. The couple also worked for Agate Ranch at Agate, NE and Larson Farms at Potter, NE.
They moved to Oshkosh in 1962 and he worked as a welder for Midwec Corp. In 1963 he went to work for Garden County Road Department and worked as road foreman for 3 districts until he retired in 1994. He worked diligently for 31 years for the department. He loved to maintain roads especially in the Sandhills. He also worked for the Garden County Weed Department for 17 years, even though he was on oxygen, he worked hard all his life. When his health forced him to quit working, he continued to take care of a very large yard and small garden and flower beds. He always HAD TO WORK! He did most of the maintenance for county road equipment and made all the repairs to his own home and machinery.
He and Norma loved to dance, play cards, visit with friends, and travel.
He was a long-time member of the United Methodist church.
