Dorothy was born on July 11, 1920, in Lewellen, NE to Herman and Hazel (Schirmer) Jenewein. She was a lifelong resident of the area from Keystone to Oshkosh. She had one brother, Hubert, and four sisters, Elvina, Elvera, Pauline, and Marie.
On December 21, 1939 she was united in marriage to Earl Lloyd Matthews. For the next few years Dorothy and Earl worked on farms and ranches in the area and then in 1950 moved into Oshkosh. In addition to their other work Dorothy and Earl operated the Oshkosh Bakery for several years. After the loss of her husband, Earl Dorothy moved to Denver to help care for her oldest son, Monte during his last years. She maintained her home in Oshkosh until she had to move into assisted living housing in Lewellen. A little over a year later she was moved to the Garden County Nursing Center because of failing health.
While her children were growing up Dorothy was very active in the Pilgrim Holiness Church. She was a gifted spiritual leader with the youth groups and impressed everyone with her enthusiasm and ability to get everyone involved.
The best description of Dorothy’s life is that it was a life of service to her community and her children. Her smile and encouraging words will be greatly missed by her family.
