Judith Rose (Rankin) Kuehn, age 72, died Wednesday evening, April 11, 2012 at her home in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M., Monday, April 16, 2012 in the St. Paul’s Lutheran in Sidney with Pastors Bradley Heinecke and Ted Bourret officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Great Plains Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association or the Autism Society of El Paso.
Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
She was born on Nov. 3, 1939 in Drumright, Okla. Her father worked as an oil driller, and, during her childhood, her family moved to several locations in Oklahoma following his work. After oil was discovered in Cheyenne County, the family moved to the Sidney area in 1954.
Judy graduated from Sidney High School in 1957. She attended Northeastern Junior College and later Chadron State Teacher’s College.
She began her teaching career at a country school outside of Bushnell, Neb., and then taught kindergarten at Lorenzo, Neb.
Judy married Robert Kuehn on August 16, 1964. After her marriage, Judy taught ABE-GED classes, was a substitute teacher in the Sidney Public Schools, and tutored numerous students. She also worked as a freelance writer, writing magazine and newspaper articles and children’s stories.
She was an avid gardener, raising roses and vegetables at home and potatoes and grapes at the family farm. She also enjoyed baking, working on her computer, helping on the farm, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Judy was active in the community serving as chair of the Cheyenne County Democrats, delivery volunteer for Meals on Wheels, superintendent and teacher for the Salem Lutheran Church Sunday school, and friend and helper to many of her students and their families who moved to the Sidney area. She was a member of the Penhandlers writing group and an editor for the Scrivener literary magazine at the Sidney Public Schools.
Judy is survived by her husband Bob Kuehn of Sidney; daughters Susan and husband John Danley of El Paso, Texas, Elizabeth Kuehn of Verona, Wis. and fiancé Ken Hamm of Hammonton, New Jersey; son Jeff Kuehn and wife LeeAnn of Germantown Hills, Ill.; five grandchildren; three sisters Nancy and husband Stewart Brown of Denton, Texas, Chris and husband John Gleason of Leavenworth, Kansas, Debi and husband Mike Biner of Missouri City, Texas; two brothers David Rankin and Cheri White of Ponca City, Okla., and Bob Rankin and wife Marie of Wayne, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
