Gerald Ratcliff, 90 of Chappell, Nebraska and a former Julesburg, Colorado resident died Monday afternoon, June 25, 2012 at the Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell.
Cremation has taken place. A private family inurnment will be held in the Genoa Cemetery at Genoa, Colorado on Sunday, July 1, 2012.
Gerald Clifford Ratcliff, the son of Dan and Ida Jane (Chambers) Ratcliff was born August 28, 1921 at Genoa, Colorado. While living in Brule, Nebraska he enlisted in the US Army’s infantry division and served from June 1942 until he was discharged in November 1945. He earned the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major, the highest rank of non-commissioned officers. He served stateside, in France and Austria and was awarded the Bronze Star. Two years after his discharge “Major” as he preferred to be called again reported for duty, this time with the Army Reserves where he served continuously for nearly 20 years and earned the rank of Major.
After his discharge he worked for Great Western Sugar Company in Ovid, Colorado and moved to Burlington, Colorado after it closed. He worked various trades in Sedgwick in the late 1980’s and moved to Julesburg after living in Silt, Colorado.
Survivors include a great-nephew Kevin Derry and wife Brenda of Chappell, Nebraska.
