Donald Collins, 85 of Dalton, Nebraska died Sunday morning, July 29, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Sidney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, August 1, 2012 in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dalton with Father Dave Rykwalder officiating. Inurnment with military rites will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday in the Calvary Cemetery at Alliance, Nebraska.
Memorials have been established to Saint Agnes Academy at Alliance.
Cremation has taken place and there is no visitation at the funeral home. Friends who wish can sign the register book at the funeral home on Tuesday.
Donald Eugene Collins, the son of James and Oda (Byrd) Collins was born September 11, 1926 at Alliance, Nebraska. He attended schools in Alliance, graduating from St. Agnes High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.
On September 23, 1947 he was united in marriage to Roberta Joy Drake in Alliance. He farmed in the Alliance area until 1953 when he was in an auto accident in which his wife was killed and he was unable to continue farming. He moved to Hemingford and worked as a mechanic. In 1957 he married Elizabeth (Allen) Gartner at Hemingford. In the early 1960’s they moved to Sidney where he owned the Sinclair service station. In the early 1970’s they returned to Alliance where he owned the Derby service station, and late worked for the City of Alliance at the airport. After he retired they moved to Dalton.
Don was a member of the Knight of Columbus and the Dalton American Legion.
Survivors include his wife Gwen Collins of Dalton, NE; one son Daniel Collins of Sidney, NE; two daughters: Marie and husband Steve Groshans of Dalton, NE and Linda and husband Carlos Flores of Sidney, NE; three step-sons: Douglas (Kathy), Charles (Debra) and David Gartner all of Sidney, NE; three brothers: Martin (Lois) and Richard (Rosey) Collins all of Alliance, NE and David (Jacoba) Collins of Florida; one sister Dorthy Burkett of Crete, NE; 13 Grandchildren and 17 Great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Roberta; his parents; a daughter Patricia Jo; five brothers: Edward, Frances, Thomas, Bernard and Jerry; a sister Doris; granddaughter Kimberly Groshans and step-granddaughter Renae Gartner.
