George C. Bartels, Jr. 83 of Moore, Oklahoma and a former Gurley area resident died Thursday morning, August 9, 2012 at his home in Moore, with his family at his side.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 15, 2012 in the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney. Burial with military rites will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
George was born on August 6, 1929 in Gurley, Nebraska to George. C. and Hannah (Kieselhorst) Bartels. He grew up in Gurley and attended the Gurley schools, graduating in 1947.
On June 20, 1951 he was united in marriage to Bette Porterfield at Gurley.
George served our country in the U.S. Army at Camp Rucker, Alabama from 1951 to 1953. Following his discharge, he began a 55-year career in the oilfield supply business at Sidney & Kimball, NE, Cortez, Craig & Ft. Morgan, CO, Great Bend, KS and for 26 years in numerous locations in Oklahoma before retiring in 2006.
On May 14, 1971 he married Alice Durrett in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
He was a 30-year member of the Cortez, CO Elk’s Lodge #1789.
George enjoyed hunting, St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Nebraska Cornhusker football, along with spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife Alice of Moore, OK; children: Cal (Vickie) Bartels of Weldona, CO, Tom Bartels (Jenifer Cross) Eaton, CO, Mary Bartels of San Rafael, CA, Lea (Cameron) Austin of Lamar, CO, Darla (Jerry) Weiher of Moore, OK and Debra (Michael) Schauermann of Lamar, CO; sister, Bonita (Larry) Flora of San Marcos CA; brother, Robert (Kathy) Bartels of Sidney, NE; his special “other” daughter Starlynn Nance of Norman, OK; as well as 10 Grandchildren, 11 Great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and 2 sisters: Lucille Elsen and Elaine Larson.
