Lois Betty Jean McConkey, 85, of Oshkosh, died Sunday, August 26, 2012 at the Garden County Health Services Hospital in Oshkosh.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oshkosh with Pastor Sarah Cordray officiating. Interment will follow in Antelope Valley Cemetery northeast of Oshkosh.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Betty’s name.

Lois Betty Jean was born on September 6, 1926 to William and Lenora Ray in Lisco, Nebraska. After her mother died she was raised by her sister, Dorthea and her husband, Harvey White in Oshkosh along with their children, Floyd, Lawrence, Kenneth, Darlene, Patricia, Raymond and Delores. She attended country schools before attending one year of high school in Boulder, Colorado before returning to Oshkosh where she graduated from Garden County High School.
After graduation she moved to Omaha to attend beauty school. She earned her beautician’s license and maintained it for most of her life. She was united in marriage to Alfred Ronald McConkey on July 22, 1946 in Chappell.
They made their home for a short time in Oshkosh before moving to the McConkey Farm to raise cattle and crops. She worked for many years at Mid-Wic. Betty and Ronald retired from farming in 1996 and moved into Oshkosh where they resided until Ronald’s passing. She lived for a short time at the Riverview Assisted Living in Lewellen before moving to the Garden County Nursing Home.
She was a member of the Eagles.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Dixie (John) Gortemaker of Oshkosh; son, Gordon (Jeannie) McConkey of Seeley Lake, MT; four grandchildren, Matthew (Lacee) McConkey of Minatare, Amanda (Eric) Fogle of Torrington, WY, Justin (Jade) McConkey of New Castle, WY, Nathen (Michele) Gortemaker of Seward, NE; eight great-grandchildren, Tilly Fogle, Macee, Jenna and Robert McConkey, Holden, Collin, and Weston McConkey, and Madison Gortemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and 13 brothers and sisters.
