Sue Thornburg, 79 of Chappell, Nebraska died Monday evening, September 10, 2012 at the Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell.
A memorial mass service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, September 14, 2012 in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chappell with Father Mike McDonald officiating. A Christian wake service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday evening at the church. Inurnment will follow the mass in the Chappell Cemetery.
Cremation has taken place and there is no visitation at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established to the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or the American Diabetes Association.
Doris Sue Thornburg, the daughter of John and Doris (Blakeman) Leonard was born December 15, 1932 at Ogallala, Nebraska. She grew up on a ranch north of Lake McConaughy before moving to Julesburg, Colorado where she graduated from Sedgwick County High School in 1950. She then attended the Mercy School of Nursing at Mercy Hospital in Denver, Colorado graduating in 1954.
On September 22, 1955 she was united in marriage to Gerald Thornburg at the Episcopal Church in Sidney, Nebraska. They made their home in Chappell their entire married life. Sue worked as a Registered Nurse in Julesburg, Chappell and Oshkosh, retiring in 1997.
Sue was an active member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband Jerry of Chappell, NE; one son Mike and wife Tammy of Overland Park, KS; one daughter Dr. Bobbi Thornburg and Becky Haney of Ada, MI; three grandchildren: Michael Thornburg, T.K. and Lora Thornburg and Lauralee and fiancé Sean; and one great-granddaughter Marlee Sue
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Jane, one sister Nancy and one brother Jack.
