Minnie Onken

June 24, 1916 — October 29, 2012

Minnie Onken, 96 of Sidney, Nebraska died Monday morning, October 29, 2012 at the Sidney Regional Medical Center, Extended Care.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, November 2, 2012 in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor David Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church or the Sidney Regional Medical Center Hospice.

Friends may call from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.

Minnie Rosina Onken, the daughter of John and Louise (Agnew) Folkerts was born June 24, 1916 at Basco, Illinois. When she was two years old the family moved to a farm near the Weyerts Church north of Lodgepole. She attended rural schools before graduating from Lodgepole High School in 1933. After high school, she stayed at home and helped on the family farm.

She met her future husband, Armin Onken while he was visiting family in the area and on March 6, 1936 they were married at the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church. To this union five children were born: Ken, Keith, Sharon, Gladys and Connie.


She and Armin farmed in the Weyerts area until 1957 when they moved to Sidney and he had a service station. Minnie went to work at Memorial Hospital in Sidney in 1966 and was the supervisor of the laundry until retiring in 1981.

She enjoyed being around family and friends and doing word find.

Survivors include one son Keith Onken and wife Sharon of Ovid, CO; two daughters: Gladys Hartzler and husband Mike and Connie Benzel both of Sidney, NE; 18 Grandchildren, 35 Great-grandchildren and 22 Great, great-grandchilden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, one daughter, one grandson, one great, great-grandson, one sister and two brothers.

Holechek Funeral Home and Cremations in Sidney is serving the Onken family.
