King Robert Rhiley, Jr.

King Rhiley, Jr., 91, of Oshkosh, died Sunday evening, November 4, 2012 at the Garden County Health Services Hospital in Oshkosh.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 9, 2012, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oshkosh with Pastor Sarah Cordray officiating. Interment will follow in the Oshkosh City Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in
Oshkosh.

A memorial has been established in King’s name to the Garden Community Foundation c/o The Oshkosh Pool Fund PO Box 291, Oshkosh, NE 69154.

King was born September 1st, 1921, in Denver, Colorado to Bertha and King Sr.

King was a daredevil and loved to drive fast cars and pilot airplanes. He was a rancher, farmer, real estate broker and appraiser and aerial applicator. When his father was inducted into the Nebraska Race Car Hall of Fame in Lincoln, King Jr. remarked his father thought racing was too dangerous, so he became a crop duster instead!

His flying qualifications were Commercial Fixed and Rotary Wing, Multiengine Rating, Instrument Rating, Flight Instructor-Airplane, Multiengine and Instrument. He logged more than 20,000 hours of flying. His main business, Rhiley’s Flying Service, was aerial application, and he was a member of the Nebraska Aerial Applicators Association. He also flew charters, air ambulance and was manager of the Oshkosh Municipal Airport.

He served his country in the Philippines in World War II, United States Army. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

In 1947 he moved his family to Oshkosh from Richmond, California. He served on the council of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, and was a member of the Oshkosh Grade School Board. He was an avid supporter of sports programs, both for grade school and his alma mater, Garden County High School, class of 1940. As a senior, he made All State Football Honors.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Norma Lee (Wyatt) Rhiley, daughters Lee Salmonson, Patricia Young and Sue (Rick) Jensen, sons King III (Barbara) and Joe (Kathy), and brother, Robert (Shirley), ten grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, plus many more whom he treated as his own.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and three brothers, Joe, Randall and Jack and nephew Scott Rhiley.
