John Kahrs

John Kahrs, 86 of Lodgepole, Nebraska died late Sunday evening, June 9, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Sidney, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, June 13, 2013 in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Lodgepole with Wayne Fraass, P.M.A officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery north of Lodgepole.

Memorials have been established to the Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell, the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or the Pleasant View Cemetery at Lodgepole.

Friends may call from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.

John Henry Otto Kahrs, the son of John Peter and Anna Wilhelmina (Einemann) Kahrs, was born January 9, 1927 at the family home located northeast of Lodgepole, NE. John attended the Goodview School. After his school years, John farmed with his uncle Otto Einemann and brother-in-law, Gerald Brestel. In 1951, John was drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean Conflict. He took basic training at Ft. Ord, CA, and served in the infantry unit in Korea but was later reassigned to an artillery unit on the 38th Parallel. He was discharged in 1953 and returned to Lodgepole.

John later purchased the Dykman farm, northwest of Lodgepole, and pursued his farming career. He raised cows, goats and sheep, along with being a wheat farmer. John retired from farming in 2004.

John was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the American Legion.

John enjoyed visiting with friends, trap shooting, hunting, wood-working and Nebraska Husker football. John always attended the Old Settlers’ Day functions held each September in Lodgepole. In 2011 he was chosen as the “King” of Old Settlers’.

Survivors include (1) brother: Ernest Kahrs and wife Pauline of Lodgepole; (1) brother-in-law: Gerald Brestel of Bend, OR; (1) nephew: Syd Brestel and wife Mary of Bend, OR; (3) nieces: Karolyn Pierson of Kremmling, CO, Pam Nelson and husband Tom of Prewitt, NM and Sandy Nelson and husband Marc of Sidney, NE, 10 great-nieces & nephews, and 12 great-great nieces & nephews. Also surviving are close friends, Shirley Bondegard and Jerry & MaryAnn Dickinson all of Lodgepole, Kathy Markel of Arizona, along with numerous community friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, (1) brother: Arland Kahrs, (1) sister: Helen Brestel, (2) nephews: Daniel Brestel and Steven Kahrs, and close friend Niccy Fraass.

Holechek Funeral Home and Cremations in Sidney is serving the Kahrs family.
