Joanna “Joan” E. Wilder Spoeneman was born December 11, 1925 to Bettie (Messer) Wilder and Thomas Wilder in Stanford, Kentucky, the youngest of 8 children and passed peacefully to her heavenly home on November 19, 2013. She grew up in Kentucky but moved to Kansas City, MO as a young teen and graduated from Paseo High School in 1943. Joan attended the Universal Institute in Kansas City, completing a Secretarial Science Course and was employed at Westport Bank in Kansas City. Joan married Howard Spoeneman September 18, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri and then moved to Brule, Nebraska where Joan became, in every way, Howard’s true helpmate. Howard’s father told him, “when you do get serious, be sure she loves God” and Joan did love God. Joan was an immersed believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and lived out His purpose with grace.
After moving to Lewellen, Nebraska in 1956 Jo immersed herself in the community through church, 4-H and school activities with her daughters. Hospitality came naturally to Jo (as all the nieces & nephews called her – Aunt Jo) and everyone who came by was always offered a cup of coffee or a glass of iced tea along with a sweet treat of some kind; cookie, cake, brownie, or a honey bun.
Joan was employed at the Lewellen Drug Store, Garden County Soil and Water Conservation District Office, Bank of Lewellen, and was Clerk for the Village of Lewellen for over 25 years. When the bank began using computers instead of hand posting all transactions, she was determined to stay “up with the times” and would go in early to self-teach herself how to master the processes involved in the new banking industry ways.
Joan is survived by daughters Barbara Vercruysse of Long Beach, CA; Sandra (Ron) Cacek of Scottsbluff, NE; and Sue (Randy) Stromberg of Omaha, NE. Grandchildren Kirstie (Vinnie) DeBiase of Long Beach, CA; Jason Vercruysse of Veneta, OR; Katherine Gryzick of Aurora, CO; Vince Cacek of Scottsbluff, NE; Ryan (Melanie) Cacek of Newcastle, WY; Matthew Stromberg of Lewellen, NE; and Zachary Stromberg of Lincoln, NE. Great grandchildren are: Ashton Cacek; Sam Jake and Hope Gryzick; Sebastian DeBiase; Sam Groves-Vercruysse; and step-great granddaughter Kerry Waite. She is also survived by brother-in-law Robert Zimmerman of Kansas City, Mo; sister-in-law Sallye Wilder of Hagerstown, MD; and sister-in-law Eloise Edson of Boise, ID and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Howard, two brothers (Harvey and Hubert Wilder), five sisters (Mamie Pendigraph, Dora Lee Partridge, Nancy Zimmerman, Emma Waas and Lucille Kincaid) and two great grandchildren Joslyn Gryzick and Elijah Groves-Vercruysse.
