Arlene Holechek

January 30, 1921 — February 8, 2014

Arlene Holechek, 93 of Sidney, Nebraska, died Saturday evening, February 8, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Sidney.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, February 13, 2014 in the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney with the Rev. Dr. Dixie Voss Anders officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church Building Fund.


Friends may call from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.

Arlene Helen Holechek, the daughter of William and Helen (Hruska) Vondrasek was born January 30, 1921 on her grandmother’s farm southeast of Table Rock, Nebraska. She grew up in Table Rock and graduated from Table Rock High School in 1938. She then attended the University of Nebraska on a Regent Scholarship. She taught school for one year each in Pawnee County, Table Rock and Neligh, Nebraska. Later she substitute taught in Bridgeport and Sidney.

On February 28, 1946 she was united in marriage to Robert Arthur Holechek in Lincoln, Nebraska, where a son Richard was born. They lived in St. Louis, Missouri, while Bob attended mortuary school and then lived in Lexington, Nebraska, where a second son James was born They moved to Sidney in 1953 where Bob worked for Craig Mortuary. In 1955 they moved to Bridgeport where Arlene became a licensed funeral director and worked with Bob in the business. They returned to Sidney in 1966 when they purchased the Craig Mortuary.


Arlene was a member of the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter FR, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #108, the American Legion Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Before Bob’s death they enjoyed traveling and attending Broadway plays in Denver. Arlene continued her travels after Bob’s death. She was an avid reader until losing her eyesight, but enjoyed listening to books.

Survivors include her son Jim and wife Jane of Sidney, NE; daughter-in-law Rose Lee Holechek of Ogallala, NE; two grandsons: Rhett Holechek of Omaha, NE and Ryan Holechek of Ogallala, NE; and three great-grandchildren: Landon, Lucy and Macsen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1985, and her son Richard in 2008.
