Helen M. Woten

July 22, 1922 — February 13, 2014

Helen M. Woten , 91, of Potter, Nebraska died Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Sidney Regional Medical Center.


Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 in the Prairie West Church in Potter with Pastor Betsy Galloway-Carew officiating. Interment will follow in the Potter Cemetery.


Memorials have been established to Prairie West Church and the Potter Fire Department.

Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with the family present from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Helen was born July 22, 192, north of Potter to Fred and Anna (Strudl) Studnicka.


Helen attended a rural country school several miles from her home. She walked a mile to a neighbor’s place to get a ride to school. She had to stay home and help with the operation of her parent’s farm instead of going to high school. She taught herself to do the many things she did in her life. She was an excellent cook and seamstress.


Helen married Myron P. Woten on April 3, 1946 in Sidney, NE.

Helen was a long-time member of First Lutheran Church and later Prairie West Church, taught Sunday school and bible school, sewed 100's of quilts with the Lutheran Church Women (LCW), she held all the offices in LCW, served 100's of funeral dinners and was the church financial secretary for many years. Helen was very active in the Cheyenne County Extension program serving on the Extension Board, 4-H Council, fair superintendent, 4-H leader and volunteer. Helen oversaw the household exhibits during Potter Days until this past year.


Survivors include her son, Ray (Tammy) of Potter and their daughters Brandi Woten and Katelyn Woten; daughters, Kathy (Ron) Drews of Yutan, NE and their children Diane (Nick) Boyd, Jeff Drews, Tim (Sarah) Drews; and Jeanne Murray (Don Peters) of Scottsbluff and her children Anita Murray (Steve) Erdman and Bryan (Angela) Murray; six great grandchildren, Megan, Alex, Hailey, Ryan, Kyle, Ian, and sister-in-law Dema Woten of Blythe, CA.


She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother and sister-in-law Lumir and Ella Studnicka, and her son-in-law, Daniel Murray, brothers and sisters-in-law Emma and Roy Van Pelt, Gladys and Myrl Pierce, Grace and Charlie White, Del and Jeannine Woten, Vera Woten and Bob Woten.

Holechek Funeral Home and Cremations in Sidney is serving the Woten family.
