Stephen John Kahl, 55 and a Sidney native died suddenly of natural causes at his apartment in Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday, January 4, 2014.
A Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, February 22, 2014 in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sidney with Father Art Faesser officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials are designated to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or the Health Center Foundation of Sidney for Diabetes Education.
Cremation has been held and there is no visitation at the funeral home. Friends who wish may sign the register book on Friday at the funeral home.
Stephen was born June 24, 1958 in Sidney, Nebraska, the son of Duane and Kathleen (McIntosh) Kahl. He was raised on his parents farm south-east of Sidney and attended the District 97 rural school. In sixth grade he transferred to St. Patrick’s grade school. Steve attended St. Patrick’s Jr. & Sr. High School. He was active in sports and swing choir there. Stephen graduated in 1976 and then went to the University of Nebraska – Lincoln for his college years. He graduated from there in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. During these years he was also a habitat for Humanity Project Volunteer. He worked for several businesses in the Lincoln and Omaha area for the rest of his career. He was a member of St. Columkille’s Catholic Church of Papillion.
Steve was formerly married to Susan Berganzel of Lincoln. He was a passionate skier and runner and participated in many 10 K runs over the years. He was also an avid reader and especially enjoyed books on American history and political figures. The U.N.L. football games were a lifelong interest.
Steven is survived by his daughter, Sarah and husband Nate Bornemeier of Lincoln, NE; his parents Duane and Kathleen Kahl of Sidney, NE; sisters: Kathy of Omaha, NE and Julie and husband Erik Williams of Bellevue, NE; brothers: William of Silver Springs, MD, twin brother Stan of Scottsbluff, NE, Duane Edward of Omaha, NE, Charles and wife Cheryl of Huron, SD, and Thomas and wife Danielle of Danville, CA; brother-in-law Tim Buras of LaVista, NE. He will also be missed by his 10 nieces and nephews and 2 grandnieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister Jana Buras of Omaha, NE, sister-in-law Tonya Kahl of Danville, CA, and grandparents: McKinley and Frances McIntosh, Leland W., Nina and Ruth Kahl of Sidney, NE
