Gene was born December 2, 1926 in Oshkosh, Nebraska, the second child of Maurice and Ruth (Murgatroyd) Guenin. He spent his childhood working on the family farm and attended grade school at the District 5 Country School. Gene graduated from Garden County High School in 1944 and upon graduation he helped on the family farm until drafted into the Army in May of 1945. He was stationed at Camp Walters, Texas and Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was discharged in July of 1946 and returned home to again assist on the family farm and help in raising cattle. In 1948, Gene built a duplex in Oshkosh and on January 26, 1949 he married Mary Violanta Polk at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Oshkosh. The couple moved into part of the duplex, renting out the rest. In 1971, Gene and Mary bought the Montgomery Ward Store and owned and operated it for 10 years. This past January, Gene and Mary celebrated 65 years of marriage together with their children and family.
Gene enjoyed hunting, golfing, spending special time with all the family and sharing stories of Oshkosh and his childhood. He is an inspiration to all of us and will be greatly missed.
