Francis J. Butterfield, 93 and a longtime Sidney resident died Tuesday evening, July 1, 2014 at the Tabitha Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Private family graveside services are planned.
Memorials have been established to Hillsdale College or Tabitha Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Francis James Butterfield, the son of Millard E. and Margaret C. (Payne) Butterfield was born November 2, 1920 in Franklin County on the family farm near Bloomington, Nebraska. The family moved to Sidney when he was a child. He attended the Sidney schools, graduating from Sidney High School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942, serving during WW II in the Pacific Theatre and was discharged from active duty in 1946. He served in the reserves until 1953.
After the war he returned to Sidney and worked in retail sales and helped his brothers with the mechanic services. While working at Snyder’s Clothing Store he met his bride to be, Doris J. Runge and they were married on October 18, 1959. To this union two daughters, Georgia Jo and Virginia Jo were born.
Francis went to work for the U.S. Postal service as a mail carrier until his retirement in 1984. After his retirement he became a traveling man, splitting his time between Sidney and Lincoln so he could spend time with his daughters and granddaughter.
Survivors include two daughters: Georgia Butterfield of Sidney, NE and Virginia Karimi of Lincoln, NE; one granddaughter Aleah JoEllen Karimi of Lincoln, NE; cousins, including two special cousins: Neal Payne of Lyman, NE and Kenneth Payne of Albuquerque, NM
He was preceded in death by his parents Millard and Maggie Butterfield, his wife Doris Butterfield, and two brothers: Perry and Dale Butterfield.
