Ida Elizabeth Schwartz, 99, of Oshkosh, NE, passed away while a resident of the Regional West Garden County Nursing Home on Monday, January 12, 2015, three months and 16 days short of her 100th birthday.
A funeral service will be held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 10:30 AM. PMA Brenda Tophoj will officiate. Burial will follow at the Oshkosh City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M, Thursday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh.
Ida Elizabeth (Richter) Schwartz, the daughter of Max and Martha Richter, was born April 28, 1915 in a farm house near Grant, NE. Her siblings include Trudy Knight of Keystone, NE and preceding her in death are Hildegard, Bill, Paul, Adelaide, Carl, John and Leo.
After attending agricultural school in Curtis, NE, she married Fred Henry Louis Schwartz of Lodgepole, NE, on June 2, 1935. They moved to Garden County and started farming in 1948. As successful famers they later added a ranch northeast of Oshkosh. In 1963 she and Fred moved into their home in town.
Ida loved her time on the farm helping Fred and raising her family. She loved her garden and had a passion for flowers as well as playing the piano. Ida was active in community affairs supporting the local PTA and teaching Sunday School at St. Mark’s. Above all she loved God and reading her Bible. Her last words to one of her nurses were “Heaven’s gate has opened and it’s beautiful!”
Ida is survived by her sister, Trudy Knight of Keystone, her son Dale of Oshkosh, her daughter, Donna and husband Rich Poturalski of Colorado Springs, CO, and daughter-in-law DeEtta Schwartz-Swanson and husband Bob Swanson and her daughter-in-law Sandra and husband John French, of Nashua, MT. Ida’s family also includes 11 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren
Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, and her sons, Glen and Gene, daughter-in-law Bina Cool Schwartz of Oshkosh, and her grandchildren, Eric and Jessica. .
