George Hartman 92 and a former Sidney resident went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2015 at Callaway Good Life Center in Callaway Nebraska.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, November 12, 2015 in the First Christian Church in Sidney with Dr. Curtiss Davis officiating. Inurnment with military rites will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Cheyenne County Community Center.
George was born June 5th, 1923 to Katrina (Maurer) and George Hartman in Frankfort, Germany. The family fled Germany and came to the U.S. on a cargo ship, via Ellis Island, New York when he was two months old. Sponsored for citizenship by a relative they moved to Chicago, and then later they moved to Colorado. Inspired by Pearl Harbor, he enlisted with his mother's signed approval in the US Navy at the age of 17. He served as a signalman, where he learned Morse code, signal flags and signal light. After his honorable discharge in 1945 as a signalman 2nd class he joined the Merchant Marines.
He married Donna Harlan August 15th, 1948 and moved to Sidney. Their son George Jr. was born June 5th, 1951. He worked at Montgomery Wards, Stickneys, and Humphreys. After his retirement he worked at the Cheyenne County Community Center.
He was a Golden Gloves Boxer and once fought on an undercard match at a Joe Louis fight. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son. He enjoyed football-especially the Huskers and Broncos and attended Denver Nuggets and Denver Bronco games with George Jr. George was an avid gun collector with numerous foreign and domestic rifles and handguns. He lived in Sidney for over 60 years, he was a member of the V.F.W, American Legion, D.A.V, and Elks and before going to Callaway, he lived with his son and daughter in-law in North Platte for 2 years.
He is survived by his son George Jr. (Jeannie) North Platte, NE, honorary son Rod Born (Joy) Lewellen, NE, sisters Nita (Mike) Stinbach, and Margie Montoya, both of Denver CO, Sister-in-law Rev. Doris Harlan Sidney, NE, grandchildren, Kendra (Mark) Laschanzky Denver CO, Jonathan Hartmann Phoenix AZ, Luke (Kayla) Hartmann Kearney NE, Katie (Jarad) Matson Johnstown CO, step-grandchildren, Brandy (Tim) North Platte NE, Stephanie Elliott Wahoo NE. Great-grandchildren Maddux, Lukas, Nevaeh, Jayda, Aleena. Step-great-grandchildren Kaci, Keenan, and Kayle.
He was proceeded in death by his wife of 67 years, Donna, parents Katrina and George, brothers, Paul, Nick, and Karl and sister Marcie.
