Lou Anne Hughes, 85 of Chappell, Nebraska died Monday afternoon, June 27, 2016 at the Sidney Regional Medical Center in Sidney.
Cremation has taken place and there is no visitation at the funeral home. Services will be held at a later date in Grand Junction, Colorado. Details of the service will be posted when available.
Lou Anne Hughes, the daughter of Preston and Eleanor (Koch) Smith was born November 29, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan. She attended college at Central Michigan and received an Associate Degree in Early Elementary Education.
On August 23, 1958 she was united in marriage to Joseph S. Smith in Douglas, Wyoming. In 1961 they moved to Grand Junction, Colorado and in 1966 they purchased the Silver Spur Motel. They retired in 1989 and moved to Loveland, Colorado. Her husband passed away in 2000 and she moved to Chappell in 2007 to be close to family.
Lou Anne was gifted with a beautiful voice and her passions were music, sewing and needlecrafts. She also had an avid interest in cats and politics and served on the Colorado State Tourism Board. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grand Junction.
Survivors include her son Tom and wife Kelli Hughes of Lakewood, CO; her daughter Jeannine and husband Greg Everitt of Chappell, NE; one step-son Dan Hughes and one step-daughter Denise Hughes both of San Antonio, TX; a brother Preston “Buz” Smith of Bradenton, Fl; a sister Judy Smith of Los Angeles, CA; 5 grandchildren and 1 step-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.
