Bob Nightingale, 81 of Sidney, Nebraska died early Saturday morning, September 24, 2016 at his home in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 28, 2016 in the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney with Pastor Leon “Bud” Gillespie officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery with military rites.
Memorials have been established to the Sidney Regional Medical Center Hospice or the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday in the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with the family present from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Bobby Earl Nightingale, the son of Earl W. and Dorothy I. (Bryant) Nightingale was born September 21, 1935 in Sidney, Nebraska. He grew up in the Sidney area where he attended country school at District #2 northeast of Sidney. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1953.
On June 12, 1955 he was united in marriage to Beverly Farmer in Sidney. To this union one daughter, Dori was born. Bev preceded him in death on December 6, 1996.
Bob was inducted into the U.S. Army, in Ft. Dix, N.J. and served in the Quarter Master Corp in Germany. He was discharged on September 16, 1960.
Bob was in the grocery business for 40 years, 20 of those as the owner of Nightingale Grocery in Lodgepole, Nebraska.
On July 3, 1999 he was united in marriage to Mary Grant. Mary had one daughter Michele and two granddaughters.
After closing the grocery store, he worked at Prestolite wire until he retired in October of 1999. After retirement he delivered meals on wheels and loved going fishing and reading western novels.
Bob introduces Mary to the sin of gambling and Mary introduced him to the sin of tequila. They enjoyed going to Deadwood, never without the little black comb he always carried in his pocket.
Survivors include his wife Mary of Sidney, NE; two daughters: Dori and husband Mark Blanke and Michele and husband Darrell Grund both of Sidney, NE; two brothers: Duane and wife Shirley Nightingale and Tom and wife Priscilla Nightingale both of Sidney, NE; two sisters: Betty and husband Cliff Ewert of Tucson, AZ and Eileen Nightingale of Sidney, NE; 5 grandchildren: Jennifer Blanke, David Blanke, Gabrielle Grund, Janae Grund and Cierra Grund; two brother-in-laws: Carl (Jan) Farmer and Marvin (Barb) Farmer and sister-in-laws: Marilyn Nightingale, Wanda Kaduk, Carletta Burton and Cheryl Farmer.
