Muriel was born May 1, 1923 at home south of Lodgepole, Nebraska to Edward R. Waite and Anna (Jenik) Waite. She attended grade school at District 144 and graduated from Lodgepole High School in 1940. She went on to receive her teaching certificate from Kearney State Teachers College (now UN-K) and taught in rural schools four years.
She married Leroy Glanz in Sidney in 1945 and they lived south of Lodgepole. Linda and Edward were born to this union. Both had the privilege of living on the farm while growing up. She enjoyed life on the farm and later moving to Sidney in 1977. She and Leroy ran Lee’s Cash Auction from the early 60’s until 1986 when it was destroyed by fire.
Muriel worked for Tufwear as a screen printer for 16 years; then at Convert A Ball for 12 years.
After Leroy passed away in 1988, she joined the Cheyenne County Art Guild. This was a great source of enjoyment and provided companionship and fulfillment. Over the years she painted numerous watercolors and oil paintings, some of which won awards at various art shows.
Muriel, Leroy and Ed built a cabin on Lake McConaughy where they enjoyed many summers and later where the Glanz family continued to gather. Muriel loved to fish. The cabin gave many opportunities for some great fishing. Everyone looked forward to getting together at the lake. Cousins, aunts, uncles and friends made great memories there.
Muriel loved to bake. Her pies were the envy of anyone who ever ate at the auction. She baked pies each week and always sold out. She also loved making homemade noodles. Every year she would make mounds of noodles before Christmas. On Christmas Eve the family would gather for noodle soup and chicken sandwiches. The family keeps the tradition alive.
Muriel was determined, hardworking and cared very much for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her grandkids had the opportunity to spend quality time with her throughout her life. She was proud of her Bohemian heritage and passed on many stories, knowledge and wisdom.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son Jimmy, her husband Leroy and her sister Wardine (Waite) Niblock, brother in law Harold Glanz, sister in law Clara and brother in law Dan Benzel, sister in law Lucille and brother in law Raymond Martin.
She is survived by daughter Linda (Leonard) Suhr and son Edward (Tina) Glanz, six grandchildren JanElle (Todd) Hoffman, Lance (Denise) Suhr, Krista (Marcus) Freeman, Kyla (Marc) Cotant, Kristin (Tony) Boltjes, and Jace (Kim) Glanz. Nineteen great-grandchildren will miss her. She is also survived by sister in law Elaine Glanz (Harold), and brothers in law John (Joan) Glanz and Les (Cheri) Glanz along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will also be missed by her longtime friend, Gina Finnel and other friends too numerous to mention.
