Loraine was the youngest of two children born to Chris and Emma Nelson on May 1, 1925, at their family farm in the Danish community southwest of Potter, Nebraska. Loraine’s older sister, Lois Jean, was her favorite playmate and remained her lifelong best friend. Loraine attended Dix schools, graduating in 1942. She then attended Colorado State University where she completed a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics in 1946.
Following college, Loraine returned to Sidney, where she met the love of her life, Edward “Ed” Brauer, at a dance at Krueger‘s Lake. They were married on November 6, 1948 in Golden, Colorado and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Ed and Loraine made their home on their family farm south of Sidney. To this union were born three sons, Kent, Bruce, and Craig. As a young mother, Loraine filled her time nurturing her sons, engaging in numerous community activities such as being a 4-H leader, helping to build the Lodgepole Valley Youth Camp, and supporting various church activities. As time passed, Loraine maintained her devotion to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and enjoyed time spent with her children and grandchildren.
Loraine’s greatest pleasure came from traveling with Ed in their motorhome to all 50 states and spending winters in Indio, California.
Loraine was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, son, Bruce, and sister, Lois Jean.
Survivors include two sons: Kent (Mary Kay) Brauer, Craig (Carla) Brauer, both of Sidney; seven grandchildren: Julia (Kevin) Bettinger of Buffalo, WY, Nick Brauer of Sidney, Jennifer (Ryan) Ford of Leawood, KS, Karl (Vanessa) Brauer of Lubbock, TX, Kurt Brauer of Sidney, Jesssica (Will) Echtenkamp of Minneapolis, MN, Josh (Alexandria) Brauer of Lincoln NE; and seven great-grandchildren: Addison, Graham, Parker, Ella, Edward, Elisabeth, and Evelyn.
